One of the blessings of recovery is that the work often helps us find our way back home. Home to the God of our understanding and in the process, a new understanding of who we are. The old labels and judgments can slip away as we discover who we are as we work our recovery programs and find community. Many are discovering that this journey is enriched when the Enneagram took is integrated into their recovery experience. The Enneagram is an ancient personality typing system that identifies Nine Personality types that are expressed individually and in relationship to others. This unique tool provides a way to understand and explain human behavior, the underlying motivations that drive behavior and the gifts we all have for the transformation of non-productive encounters with others. Thomas Merton said, “There is only one problem on which all existence, my peace, and my happiness depend: to discover myself in discovering God. If I find Him I will find myself and if I find my true self I will find Him.” This tool can be a tremendous asset for us as individuals and as recovery leaders.
