The Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous are not the twelve ideas. They are not the twelve convictions. Or the twelve doctrines. They are twelve suggested things to do. The twelve steps is not a ‘statement of faith.’ It is a suggested ‘to-do’ list. Addicted people learn from painful experience that we can’t just think our way out of our problems. A.A. does not offer a better way of thinking our way to sobriety. It offers a list of suggested behaviors that can result in new experiences which might, if practiced daily, result in a spiritual awakening that leads to a different kind of life.
The Bible puts it this way: “faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (N.I.V., James 2:17). The Big Book of A.A. puts it like this: “The spiritual life is not a theory. We have to live it.”
So, what do you do when you do the twelve steps? That is what this class is about. Our presenters will look at each step primarily from the perspective of what behaviors are being suggested. What we have to offer here is four people with significant experience doing the steps and helping others to do the same. We hope that some of their suggestions will be helpful to you.
